US Army, 44yrs
Jan 5th anniversary of the passing of Sgt First Class Stefen Ellis Sammons, 44, US Army of Winfield WV. We honor and remember him, his family, and his late mother Miranda Perry 'Sammons. SFC Sammons was born May 1, 1964 in Huntington, WV.
Ellis enlisted in the West Virginia Army National Guard in September 1992 after spending eight years in the United States Marine Corps. His first assignment with the Guard was Bravo Company, 19th Special Forces Group(Airborne) in Kenova, WV. SFC Sammons mobilized with the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group(Airborne) for Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Joint Guardian, Operation Iraqi Freedom. He died January 5, 2009 at Camp Atterbury, IN.
His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, the N.A.T.O. Non Article 5 Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Schutzenschnur Level, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Army Service Ribbon, and the National Defense Service Medal.
The 2nd Battalion 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and members of the West Virginia Honor Guard conducted a full Military Graveside with Honors.
He is survived by his wife, Shelia Eplin Sammons; two daughters, Raven Chelsea Sammons of Glenwood, WV, and Autumn Danielle Bolen of Glenwood, WV; step-son, Joshua Ryan Adkins of Winfield, WV, several grandchildren and siblings.
