SSG Robert “Rob” Cunningham

July 12 marks the anniversary of the passing of SSG Robert “Rob” Cunningham, 27, US Army, of Hurricane WV. He was born Dec 27th 1990 and died suddenly July 12th 2018.

We honor and remember him, his family, and his Mother Terry Cunningham, who is the current WVGSM President and still resides in Hurricane. 

Rob was a 2009 graduate of Hurricane High School.  He enlisted in the West Virginia National Guard in 2010 and was pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business while serving his state and country.  

Rob was honored for his outstanding efforts, by earning the 2014 West Virginia and Region II Soldier of the Year awards and received the National Soldier of the Year bronze medal.  In 2015, Rob earned the State, Regional and National Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year award and competed admirably in the All Army Best Warrior Challenge.  

Rob credited the West Virginia National Guard with giving him the chance to be the best man he could be and giving him immeasurable opportunities.

Rob's personal highest honor was attending the Sapper Leaders Course earning the coveted SAPPER Tab in 2016. 

Rob was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane, WV. He was highly respected by his peers and is greatly missed.
