Specialist Nicholas "Nick" Caleb Jividen

21, Airborne Infantry

November 6 marks the anniversary of the passing of Specialist Nicholas "Nick" Caleb Jividen, 21, of Crestview, Florida. We honor and remember him, his family, and his mother Margaret Jividen of Poca WV.

Nick was born December 25th, 1996, and was a graduate of Poca High School, Class of 2015.

Nick traveled to multiple continents in his short time in the military. He was a signal analyst to Headquarters Support Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). His services spanned the gamut of Combat Support in Syria and Kuwait (CJS0TF-OIR) to contingency operations in Chile as part of larger SOUTHCOM initiatives to combat illicit trafficking of Special Interest Aliens, narcotics and radicalization across the continent.

SPC Jividen died, Tuesday, November 6, 2018, from injuries in an armored vehicle training incident at Fort Irwin in Loma Linda, California.

Nick loved to hunt, fish, play and watch football, and golf among other things.  He especially loved riding his Harley Davidson.  Nick just couldn’t be tied down, he always had to be going somewhere.

He's just the type of person that made everybody happy," said Dee Wright, a former teacher of Nick at Poca High School. She received an e-mail in class that a former student of hers had died and was in disbelief. Army Specialist Nicholas Jividen was a 2015 graduate of Poca High School. An Army spokesperson says Jividen died during a routine training exercise in California. Wright says news of Jividen's death came as a shock because she says he wasn't a wild kid. "He followed rules and did things like you were supposed to do them. He wasn't one you would think would have an accident. He was careful about what he did in his life and how he did it," said Wright. "He did things in a military way. He could be so focused and so compartmentalized, and he could follow the rules. He was a great kid," said Wright.

Nick was also a member of the Poca Dot football team. Wright says he was always focused on the job at hand, and she always looked forward to the times when he would come back to Poca High School for a visit.

"The pride that he has in what he was doing. He knew his job was important, and he did it well. He was proud of that and so were we," said Wright.

"When I found out I was in shock," said Tiffani Smith, also a former teacher of Jividen at Poca High School. "I just remember his smile. The smile would light up a room. He was very friendly and very nice to everyone. Always helpful," said Smith.

Nick is survived by his mother Margaret Jividen and brother Daniel Jividen both of Poca, as well as his God Parents Andy and Diane Kent of Nitro,

SPC Julian L. Guthrie Berisford

25, US Army

November 4 marks the passing of SPC. Julian L. Guthrie Berisford, 25, US Army of Benwood, WV. We honor and remember him, his family, and his mother Shelley Guthrie, of Moundsville WV.

SPC Berisford was born June 13, 1984 in Wheeling, WV, son of Shelley Guthrie, of Moundsville, and Jule Berisford, also of Moundsville. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Julian died Nov. 4th  2009 in the Bermal district, Pakitika Province,  Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire.  He was deployed to Afghanistan in March of 2009 and was serving on his 1st Tour of Duty.

Julian graduated from John Marshall High School in 2002; attended West Liberty State College; PIA of Pittsburgh; and enlisted in the US Army in 2007.

Julian wanted to be there for his daughter’s first steps, so he asked his wife to hold little Mya back just until he could come home. He was supposed to come home in November to celebrate Mya’s first birthday.

Julian loved hunting, fishing and “the great outdoors,” as he wrote on his MySpace page. He was proud of his family and proud of being a soldier, said his cousin Randi Jo Chavanak. “The only thing he said before he left was that he was going to do things right for families like ours,” Chavanak said. “He was going to fight for families.”

Julian enjoyed spending time with his family & friends, and was a huge Mountaineer fan, an amateur guitarist; and he loved listening to music, especially The Beatles. “He was a jokester and a fun-loving guy and always smiling,” said Cathy Jones, whose son went to school with him.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Moundsville.

Julian was a friend to everyone he met.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his loving, dedicated wife, and soul mate, Gina Marie Yankovich Berisford, who he married on December 31, 2007; and their beautiful baby girl, Mya Jean Berisford; who he adored; both were the love of his life.

Let us always remember him and…
