49, US Air Force
August 2 marks the anniversary of the passing of Tech. Sgt. David “Andy” Board, 49, of Barboursville, West Virginia, We honor and remember him, his mother Linda Mahan Board, his wife Lynn Grimm and his family.
Tech Sgt Board was born Sept 19, 1967, in Parkersburg WV. After graduating from Ripley High School in 1985 he joined the Air Force. He was assigned to the 130th Airlift Wing at McLaughlin Air National Guard Base, West Virginia. Tech Sgt Board died August 2, 2017, in Kuwait in a non-combat-related incident while deployed in support of combat operations Serving During Operation Inherent Resolve.
Andy enlisted in the Air Force in 1986 and had been a member of the Air Force for 14 years. In addition to Inherent Resolve, he deployed previously in support of Operations Desert Shield and Storm. He also served in the Air National Guard where he was assigned to Puerto Rico and deployed to Antarctica.
Following his time in the military, he worked at AK Steel in Ashland. He lost his job at AK Steel when they made sweeping layoffs in December 2015. He then went back to work as an aircraft fuels systems craftsman with the 130th Airlift Wing.
Friends of Andy say he loved serving his country and travelling the world. "He was at the South Pole a few years ago for maybe 30 days or so," Andy’s former co-worker Boog Easterling said. "He was down there working on the aircrafts." "He was a good supervisor," Easterling said. "He was the kind of guy that would lighten up a room." Easterling says he heard from Sgt Board on social media just a week before his death. “I put a post on Facebook about stuff I was getting out of the garden," Easterling said, "and he said he wished I could send him some corn, but it probably wouldn't make it all the way to Kuwait. That was the last I heard from him."
The 130th Wing released a video of Col. Johnny Ryan, Jr. memorializing him. “He epitomized the core values: integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all that he did," Ryan said. "David was a great American, a true patriot, and he'll be greatly missed."
He is survived by his spouse, Lynn Grimm; son, Derik Board; daughters, Devan Board and Kylie Board; stepson, Chris (Brittani) Mobley; step-granddaughter, Aria Mobley; parents, David and Linda Board; sister, Sarah Ruth (Justin Carpenter) Board.
He is buried at Pleasant View Cemetery, Millwood, W.Va.
Let us always remember him and his family and…
