USMC - 22 years old
April 30 marks the anniversary of the passing of CPL. Joshua Shane Wilfong, 22, US Marine Corps of Walker, WV. We honor and remember him and his mother Bee Wilfong of Parkersburg WV. He was born on Aug 28, 1981.
Joshua was a graduate of Parkersburg High School class of 2000 and joined the Marine Corps upon graduation.
In April 2003, his unit landed on the shore of Kuwait in support of Operation: Iraqi Freedom as one of 4,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines who deployed aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group. During the deployment his unit participated in training, humanitarian assistance and peace support operations in Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Kenya and Djibouti, Africa.
Cpl. Wilfong was assigned to 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He was killed in action on April 30, 2004, in Anbar province, Iraq.
Driving all-terrain vehicles and trucks or just riding with friends on muddy backroads were some of Joshua’s favorite pastimes. "He was a real go-getter. Any time we’d go out on the back roads and get stuck, he was always the first one out in the mud with a chain," said his friend Chris Houce. "He’d have mud all over him. He was just that kind of guy who would do stuff like that for you. He was always there with his buddies."
“It is a very, very sad day for this area,” said Parkersburg WV Mayor Jimmy Colombo. “We must try to get through this by trying to think positively. These soldiers are putting their lives on the line for their country. The bravery of these young people sets a great example for us all.”
Joshua also leaves behind two sisters Cassy and Jennifer and one brother Jerimiah. His brother Shawn passed in 2015.
Let us always remember him, his family, and…
